4/16/2023 0 Comments Cast away fedexAs Chuck returns to civilization, Fedex’s CEO personally gives him a hero’s welcome. Before the plane’s untimely destruction, we see Chuck develop a close rapport with his fellow fliers and we later see him burying Allan Miller, who assisted him during the plane’s descent into the abyss. What does the company’s major presence in Zemeckis’ film tell us? In my view, the company is one built upon camaraderie. The film’s conclusion, however, marks a sort of salvation for both Chuck and Fedex, as he is lavished upon his return to the company’s Memphis headquarters. Fedex is always there in Cast Away as Chuck is forced to open various packages and use the materials within to aid in his survival efforts. As such, mass-market films could be a possible outlet for marketers to convey their messages other than resorting to traditional advertising such as commercials or billboards. In 2000, the Internet was still catching on as a mainstream concept wi-fi did not exist and neither did social media. This may be due to the changing marketing environs of these two distinct disasters (one fictional and one real). Unfortunately, this redemption scenario has not been the case for Malaysia Airlines, which saw one of its planes fall from the skies, leaving no survivors. The fact that Chuck’s Fedex plane is destroyed over the Pacific Ocean undoubtedly caused some misgivings within Fedex’s upper management, although they later came around when they viewed the big picture and witnessed how Chuck finally returns home. The Fedex slogan “The World On Time” seems foreign here as Chuck resorts to keeping track of the passing months by scrawling in his cave away from the pounding waves and occasional rainstorms. Ironically, Chuck is cast away on a faraway island with no control over anything except his own survival. Hanks portrays Chuck Noland, a Fedex employee who travels the world enforcing company policies with respect to time control. Beyond the compelling story, however, lay some interesting notes from a product placement standpoint. A few days ago, I chose to watch Robert Zemeckis’ epic film Cast Away on Netflix–it had been some time since I last saw the film that gave Tom Hanks a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
